If you notice in some major parts of the world, you’ll see that about 70% of ladies now wear leg chains. Leg chain, otherwise known as Anklet, is a kind of ornament which is worn around the ankle by most ladies. It has been worn over the past years by girls and women in South Asia and Egypt.
These leg chains are been adored most especially, by Indian women during their marriages. Occasionally, in some parts of South Asia, Anklets are been worn on both legs.
In present-day Nigeria, many ladies now adopt the wearing of anklets for aesthetic purposes. In Nigeria, there are no cultural reasons for wearing leg chains like it is in Egypt and other Asian Countries.
Throughout history, the wearing of anklets has meant different things to different people. In some cultures, ladies who wear anklets are seen to be promiscuous, and immoral. The earliest usage of anklet can be traced to ancient predynastic Egypt where anklet or leg chain was used as a form of class distinction- to tell the rich from the poor. Wives of rich men wore gold leg chains, while the slaves, poor, or plebeians wore silver, metallic, or leather leg chains. It was about conforming to the social strata or affordability, and also a fashion accessory.
Due to the various misconceptions about leg chains, it has become the most controversial accessory worn by women in Nigeria today. While some see it as an ordinary fashion accessory, some see it as a tag for ‘Ashewos’, and a tool for sexual liberation.
However, different cultures have different meanings ascribed to the wearing of leg chains, but even at this, they still admit to the fact that legs chains also serve aesthetic purposes, and this is similar to most cultures.
