REPORIENTATION | CHARACTER

“Character in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of the nations alike”
– Theodore Roosevelt

Character erects a fence between a good leader and a bad one. It is part of what makes us different, the one from the other. It describes the owner.

It is one thing everyone has- leaders and followers alike. It is what we have done, are doing and will always do. If a neighbour can tell what one would do in a given situation, that is simply one’s character. It defines the owner because it is fixed.

One’s character can be good or bad, it all depends on the values the society esteem and celebrate, and even our personal values. What we believe and value determines our character. Values are not the same across the world but some are common. Some values cover a large spatial distribution and can be observed almost every where on earth while others are limited to certain locations. In all, what values do is to mould our characters.

Character is not what we build in a day, it takes a length of time to build either a good one or a bad one. It does not happen like lightning; it is gradual and intentional. Characters are actions we take in relation to what we have believed over the years which we still hold on to.

Someone said, “Character is who we are when no one is watching.” It is our true self without a bit of acting. When many choose to act who they are not, in order to please others, their adventures eventually end in naught, they become sick of acting, since what they act is not their nature. The audience are left hurt when they observe the real character of such persons.

It is of great necessity to choose our personal values carefully and know the values of the society we live in. This will help us live right. Values are needed for national development and we all need them. There are ethical principles in our places of work we need give regards. Nothing will improve in this nation, if no one cares about honouring our national values and personal ones.

Even in this cosmos, where values are changing and are given less attention, choose to live right. Stand on something not on nothing; plants without firm roots are tossed to and fro the earth. Richard Demeritte Jr. once said, “When in doubt, do what’s right.” How do you know what is right when you don’t have a moral standard? Get some values and be committed without compromise.

… and for a better life, I will never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense!
